The Barley Development Council is pleased to hold the tenth annual Malting Barley Quality Competition (MBQC) to recognize western Canadian farmers who grow top quality two-row and six-row malting barley.
Farmers are eligible to enter the competition if they grow two-row or six-row malting barley varieties from the Canadian Malting and Brewing Technical Centre’s 2005-06 Recommended List and the sample of their selected malting barley is received by November 15, 2006.
“After a year off in 2005, the Malting Barley Quality Competition is back and we’re looking forward to receiving a record number of entries from the 2006 crop.” said President and CEO of the gold level sponsor Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute (BMBRI) and MBQC committee chair Dr. Erin Armstrong. “All farmers whose malting barley is selected are eligible to enter the competition.”
To enter the competition, a representative sample (about one pound or four cups) must be appropriately packaged and sent with an entry form to the Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute’s Winnipeg office to be received by November 15, 2006. Entry forms are available from all sponsors listed below and from malting barley selectors and grain elevators. Draws will be held for three Westeel bin probes, valued at $1,500 each, from among all the samples received – one from those samples received by October 15, 2006, and the other two from all entries received by the final deadline of November 15, 2006.
Commercial malting barley selectors will judge the entries for two- or six-row malting barley submitted from each crop district. Winning district entries will then be judged to select provincial winners, and an overall grand champion. District and provincial winners will be announced in December. District winners will each receive an expense-paid trip for two to Edmonton to attend a special program being held in conjunction with Farm Tech in January, 2007. Provincial winners will be taken on a second prize trip to western Canada in March 2007.
"Just coming off a recent crop tour, I think we can expect a great turnout to this year’s competition,” said Scott Brown, Chair of the Barley Working Group at The Brewers Association of Canada, a gold level sponsor. “The program innovations introduced by the Barley Development Council promise to add to the success of this year’s event. Great beer demands great barley and we are looking forward to recognizing the top western Canadian malt barley producers."
Sponsors of the 2004 Malting Barley Quality Competition include: Gold - The Brewers of Canada, the Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute and the Canadian International Grains Institute; Silver – Alberta Barley Commission, Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre, The Canadian Wheat Board, Prairie Malt Limited and Westeel; Bronze – Agricore United, BARI Canada Inc., Cargill AgHorizons, Farm Pure Seeds, Paterson Grain, Pioneer Grain, Rahr Malting Canada, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, SeCan, Seed-Ex, and SGS Canada Inc.
